NAGAPATTINAM: C.V. Sankar, Officer on Special Duty, Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation, and a three-member team from the World Bank conducted a preliminary survey at several places in the coastal belt of Nagapattinam district on Thursday for providing concrete-roof houses for the fishermen living in thatched huts and mud houses within 1,000 metres of the shoreline. The consultants E. Narayanan, Shankar Narayanan and S.Vaideeswaran along with Mr. Sankar and Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, inspected the huts and mud houses at Poompuhar, Kumarakudi, Chinnangudi, Tarangampadi, Nagapattinam and Velankanni areas and interacted with the fishermen. Later they held discussions at the Collectorate with the participation of representatives of non-Governmental organisations.
Fishermen's wish
Talking to media persons, Mr. Sankar said that the Government was mulling on whether the State or NGOs should construct the houses. A decision would be taken soon. Mr. Sankarsaid that some fishermen were interested in constructing the houses on their own if funds were provided to them and the work could be monitored by the officials. He said that similar surveys would be conducted in Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts in the next two days.
