Controversy erupts after closure of school

Staff Reporter

Some parents allege that their wards have not returned home

BERHAMPUR: A group of guardians and parents gheraoed the tehsil office at Daringbadi in Kandhamal district from morning till evening.

These persons from villages of Daringbadi block alleged that their daughters had not returned home after closure of government residential school for girls at Daringbadi.

After unruly scenes at the school, the district administration had to close it down on Tuesday in the presence of the police. The girls residing in hostels were handed over to their parents or arrangements were made for their safe return to home. All hostels were vacated by Wednesday.

But on Thursday, a group of parents of some 30 students reached the office of the Daringbadi tehsildar and alleged that their wards had not reached home. They demanded that the tehsildar locate the girls as he was present when the hostels were vacated. Baliguda Sub-Collector Binod Kumar Mohapatra had to rush to hold discussions with the agitating persons.

Irregularities

Before closure, the girls of the school were boycotting classes and staging demonstrations demanding cancellation of transfer order of the in-charge headmaster Devaraj Sahu. They allegedly manhandled the new headmistress posted to the school. The action against Sahu was a result of the police investigation that revealed many of his alleged misdeeds, including financial irregularities. Porno VCDs and condoms were also recovered allegedly from his room at the school. As the administration sensed something fishy behind the support being extended to Sahu by the girls, it was decided to close the school till further orders.
