`Naughty' calls from stolen cell

Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: Cellular telephones are doing immense help to all sections of people for connectivity. But they can do greater harm when they are lost or stolen, realizes an astrologer, Mani Sarma, to his dismay.

Thieves broke into Mr. Sarma's house in Annavarappadu here on Sunday night and decamped with his motorcycle and cell phone. The theft of cell phone proved to be traumatic to Mr. Sarma, his clients and others. A woman, who had strained relations with her husband, had approached Mr. Sarma for astrological guidance. He predicted that separation would be inevitable but advised her patience. Against this background, the woman received notice from her husband seeking divorce on Tuesday. Unaware of the theft, she tried to contact Mr. Sarma over his cell phone for advice. Obviously, the culprit answered the phone. When she revealed her plight and sought advice, the culprit advised her to divorce her husband. He also offered her all help if she came to him later. She was stunned by the tone and tenor and grew wild. She called Mr. Sarma's wife on landline and informed her of the misbehaviour. She was relieved when informed about the theft and the mischief played by the culprit.

Mr. Sarma lodged a complaint with the police who kept surveillance on the calls made to and from the stolen cell phone to trace the culprit. They found that three or four calls were made to a cell phone in Kakinada. When they called that number, they were shocked to hear another tale of woe. The cell phone belonged to a woman working as a lecturer in nursing college at Kakinada. She informed the police that the culprit had been calling her over different telephones for the last three months and harassing her with his indecent calls. She too requested the police to nab him and put an end to her agony.Mr. Sarma is now worried that the BSNL would ask him to pay astronomical bill for all the calls made by the culprit. He wanted to request BSNL to disconnect his post-paid connection immediately. But police advised him against it on the plea they can get valuable information from the calls made from the phone to nab him.
