Syndicate meeting takes no decision on Registrar issue

Staff Reporter

KANNUR: Kannur University Syndicate meeting held on the Mangattuparamba campus here on Thursday could not take any decision on the show cause notice served on Kannur University Registrar by it at its last meeting on April 18 as the Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan opposed the demand by some Syndicate members to take up the issue for discussion.

Agenda

The meeting held amidst protests staged outside the Syndicate Hall by a section of university staff, teachers and students loyal to the United Democratic Front (UDF) against what they termed as a move to dismiss Registrar K.M. Abdur Rasheed could not take up the show cause notice item in the agenda.

When some of the Syndicate members demanded immediately after the confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting that the Registrar's reply to the show cause notice be taken up for discussion, the Vice-Chancellor was understood to have said that he was yet to receive the reply and that the Registrar could submit his reply till 5 p.m. The meeting was adjourned after deciding that the next Syndicate meeting would be held on April 30. No other items in the agenda could be taken up for discussion.

The Registrar had been served the show cause notice on April 19 following the decision of the Syndicate on April 18. The activists of Kannur University Democratic Front (KUDF), which is loyal to the UDF, staged a protest march on the campus and held a sit-in outside the Syndicate Hall alleging moves to expel the Registrar.

They said Syndicate meetings were being held thrice during the past three weeks with the intention of dismissing the Registrar on flimsy charges that had been refuted by the Vice-Chancellor. The KUDF activists said funds were wasted on convening Syndicate meetings that did not discuss anything related to the university's academic issues.
