KOZHIKODE: Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty will inaugurate the 44th State conference of Kerala NGO Union to be held in Kozhikode for four days from April 30. The conference will begin with the State annual council meeting on April 30 and will conclude with a procession and public meeting on May 3. The privatisation and the increasing foreign investment and participation will bring down the standard of life of common man and workers. The Contributory Pension Scheme, contract and temporary appointments and opening up of PSUs and markets for foreign capitalists, all point out to a situation where the common people and workers will have to lead a difficult life in the future. State Governments, expect those in Kerala, Tripura and West Bengal, were blindly following these policies of the Centre. NGO Union, a constituent of the All India State Government Employees Federation, has the responsibility to lead the agitations against these policies. This will be one of the main debating points at the conference, C.H.Asokan, general secretary, NGO Union said. Kozhikode Mayor and Conference Reception Committee chairman, M.Bhaskaran and Union president, V.M. Pavithran said that 800 delegates representing the total membership of 1,29, 318 as per 2006 statistics will be attending the conference. Of these, 150 women delegates are also included. Delegates conference, cultural conference, women's conference, send-off meeting and public meeting are part of the conference.
Issue of corruption
Mr. Asokan and Mr. Pavithran said that it was the Government that should take action if any of the employees was found guilty of corruption. They said that in most cases, the guilty employees escape the dragnet of law owing to the indifference of the Government. If anyone in the list of office-bearers of NGO Union was found guilty in corruption, he\she will be dismissed from the primary membership of the organisation. He also urged other service organisations to follow such a model code of conduct. Also, they should vow not to take anyone dismissed thus from an organisation. They also demanded that Government reform the rules and regulations that were, according to them, making the Civil Services inefficient. Responding to the Chief Minister's remarks that a section of employees were not working, they said that mere statements would not serve any purpose. The Chief Minister and the Government should take steps to make the employees work.
