Fine for poor upkeep of `dhalaos'

NEW DELHI: The new Delhi Mayor, Arti Mehra, on Thursday ordered that private firms managing garbage disposal in South Delhi and West Delhi be fined Rs.10,000 each for poor upkeep of "dhalaos".

The order came after she made an extensive tour of South and West Delhi colonies and heard complaints of area councillors and MLAs. Besides imposition of fines, she also ordered that the 13 spots be thoroughly cleaned up immediately. She also instructed the Director-in-Chief (Environment Management Services) to ensure that there is no collection of garbage on the streets.

Nominations filed

NEW DELHI: On the first day of filing of nominations for office-bearers of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Vijendra Gupta and Yogendra Chandolia of the Bharatiya Janata Party filed their papers for the posts of Chairman and Deputy Chairman, respectively.

The last date for filing nominations is April 30 and the election will be held on May 3 at the Old Meeting Hall, coinciding with the first meeting of the MCD Standing Committee.

CFL scheme extended

NEW DELHI: Power distribution company NDPL has extended the last date for its special promotional scheme on energy-saving Compact Fluorescent Lamps for consumers in North Delhi and North-West Delhi till May 31.

Under the scheme, NDPL consumers are being offered one CFL free on purchase of two CFLs. In addition, NDPL consumers can also purchase electronic choke at a discount of 29 per cent on the maximum retail price and get a 36W tube-light free.

RI for torturing wife

New Delhi: After a legal battle spanning more than two decades, a Delhi court on Thursday sentenced a 50-year-old man to three years' rigorous imprisonment for subjecting his wife to mental torture over dowry.

Metropolitan Magistrate Nirja Bhatia held Sardar Satpal Singh guilty of causing mental torture to his wife Manvinder Kaur (42) and slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 apart from the imprisonment. Manvinder Kaur, in her complaint, said she got married to Satpal Singh on March 6, 1986 and her father had given her sufficient dowry. However, after a month of the marriage, she was subjected to mental torture for a TV set and other household items, she said.

The accused, along with his mother, allegedly tortured her and humiliated on several occasions.
