Corporation to enlist help to identify voters and update photo rolls

Staff Reporter

  • Only voters whose names figure in rolls will be photographed
  • Corporation has sent notification chits to voters

Chennai : The Chennai Corporation plans to involve civic welfare organisations such as Exnora to help in identifying voters whose photographs are yet to find a place in the electoral rolls.

The Corporation, under directions from the Election Commission of India, had begun an exercise in June 2006 to prepare a comprehensive list of voters along with their photographs. Photo rolls will act as a major deterrent against impersonation and bogus voting, said officials of the Corporation.

Despite three rounds of door-to-door verification in the 14 Assembly constituencies of Chennai, the Corporation officials found that many voters' photographs could not be entered in the electoral rolls.

Either the residents were unavailable when verification staff visited homes or they had moved to a new locality. Also, many of the passport sized photographs that voters submit were of poor quality or smudged.

    Welfare organisations

In order to find personal details of these residents, the Corporation will enlist the support of volunteers from civic and resident welfare organisations.

These representatives could collect good resolution passport-sized photographs of the voters and hand it over to the Corporation.

They could also update verification staff if a voter has moved from the neighbourhood.

The Corporation has sent notification chits to voters whose pictures are yet to be added to the electoral rolls. Voters can visit the zonal offices on the scheduled dates till April 30 to get photographed.

Only voters whose names figure in the electoral rolls will be photographed.
