T.S. Ranganna
BANGALORE: He was an embodiment of several uncommon virtues, not just on screen but in real life too. No philanthropic work in the State for those who suffered from disasters used to be complete without Rajkumar's involvement, whether it was the construction of a destitutes' home in Mysore, feeding of poor devotees of the famous Srikantheswara Temple at Nanjangud, or helping fellow cine artistes in financial distress, "Rajanna" would always extend his help. Last Tuesday was a time for the fans of the actor, who died a year ago, to pay him back. At a function at Kanteerava Stadium, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Ambareesh, who is a former actor himself, made an impassioned plea to Rajkumar fans to donate their mite for building a memorial, museum and theatre in the matinee idol's name. Apologising for making such an appeal, he said he was doing so only because Rajkumar, who was a father-figure to his fans, would have been delighted with the involvement of his "abhimanis" (admirers) in the construction of a memorial. The huge gathering responded with whistles.
