The civic administration seems to have gone into overdrive to check the sale of adulterated food materials in the city. Over the past week, the health section of the City Corporation conducted several raids on hotels, ice-cream parlours and illegal slaughterhouses. While one of the raids revealed that ice-cream vendors were fobbing customers off by selling frozen dessert, two hotels were booked for careless disposal of waste. The latest raid unearthed a huge quantity of meat unfit for human consumption. A catering service was also served notice for failure to maintain hygienic environs. Civic officials admit that sporadic raids will not help to stem unhygienic practices posing a threat to public health. They point out that police assistance is imperative to crack down on outlets selling food materials. The corporation had earlier mooted the idea of a separate police team for the job. But the proposal did not take off for a variety of reasons.
