Award to be presented on April 30

DESERVING HONOUR: Jagdish Mittal and his wife Kamla.

HYDERABAD: Yudhvir Foundation, which honours individuals who excel in different fields, has announced that this year's award would be presented to eminent art collector Jagdish Mittal and his wife Kamla Mittal here on April 30.

The Foundation was formed in 1991 to perpetuate the memory of late Yudhvir, freedom fighter, journalist and founder of `Hindi Milap' daily.

Announcing the details of the 16th Yudhvir Foundation award at a press conference here on Thursday, its chairman Narendra Luther and secretary Vinay Vir, said the award would be presented to the artist-couple by vice-chairman, Knowledge Commission, P.M. Bhargava. It carries a citation and cash amount, which was enhanced from Rs. 25,000 to Rs.50,000 this year.

Stating that this was the first time the award was being given to a couple, Mr. Luther said the Mittals had established `Jagdish and Kamla Museum of Indian Art' as a public trust on March 30, 1976 and donated their exquisite collection of Indian paintings and art objects to the trust.

    Traditional arts

He said the museum's collection comprised 2,000 art objects belonging to the traditional arts and crafts of the Indian sub-continent, including miniature paintings, drawings, classical bronzes, examples of calligraphy, textiles, ivory, jade objects and handicrafts produced between the 1st Century and 1990 AD.

He lamented that there was no response from Government to requests time and again for providing land to build and house the museum.
