Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Cochin University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azis said here on Thursday that the university will play a major role in grooming IT professionals for the Smart City project.

In his inaugural address at the national conference on software engineering here, Dr. Azis said that the academic programmes of the university would be restructured in accordance with the demands of the industry. He urged the research and faculty members to launch an IT park on the campus.

Academic excellence

Such a facility would help achieve academic excellence and also provide an earning to hundreds of students on the campus. Human resource of the computer science and the allied departments should be utilised for the project, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the Computer Science Department to come forward and support computer literacy programmes like Akshaya. Sathish Babu, secretary of the National Execom, Computer Society of India, presided over the inaugural function.

Meeting demand

He said that academic programmes in the branch of software engineering were insufficient to cater to the current demands of the IT industry.

H.R. Mohan, Chairman of the Software Division of Computer Society of India, and associate vice- president of The Hindu released the conference proceedings comprising 50 research papers by handing over a copy to Dr. Azis.

In his address, Mr. Mohan said that applying engineering principles in various stages of software development process was crucial in maintaining India's lead in the IT and software sector. The manpower development has to be geared up, he said.
