THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Cabinet on Thursday decided to order a detailed inquiry into all encroachments and unauthorised constructions in Government land at Munnar and nearby areas in Idukki district. Principal Secretary (Revenue) Nivedita P. Haran will conduct the inquiry and submit a report. A police team headed by Inspector-General of Police S. Vijayanand will be deputed to assist the investigation. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandnan told mediapersons after a Cabinet meeting that he would personally visit Munnar and nearby areas on April 28 for an on-the-spot assessment of the encroachments. Action against officials who had connived with the encroachers would be taken later on the basis the inquiry by Ms. Haran. The Chief Minister said the Cabinet had formed a seven-member sub-committee to oversee implementation Rs.1,441-crore tsunami relief packages in the State. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma, Public Works Minister T.U. Kuruvilla, Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran, Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran and Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan would be members of the committee. As directed by the Planning Commission, all relief projects would be completed before May 2009. He announced that IAS officer E.P. Gopi would be posted as Wayanad Collector. Incumbent Sharmila Mary would be appointed as Director of the Surveys Department. Teekaram Meena would be appointed as Director of the Institute of Management in Government. He said the Cabinet decision on the Smart City project, approving the terms of the agreement for implementation of the project, had been communicated to the Dubai Technology, E-commerce and Media Free Zone Authority.
