Man held in murder attempt case

NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old man has been arrested at Okhla here for allegedly making an attempt on the life of a former woman colleague. The woman, however, escaped unhurt.

According to the police, Ajay Kumar shot at the woman with a country-made pistol on Thursday while she was standing outside her office. She rushed inside the building unhurt. However, one of her colleagues suffered a bullet injury and was taken to hospital for first-aid. Ajay claimed that he was in love with the woman.

The woman, however, told the police that Ajay had borrowed Rs. 15,000 from her a few months ago and despite repeated requests had not returned the money. When she insisted, he allegedly threatened to tarnish her reputation, the police said.

Hotel fire in CP

NEW DELHI: A fire broke out in a hotel at Connaught Place here on Thursday. Luckily no one was injured.

According to the Fire Service Department, the fire broke out at Hotel Blue early on Thursday morning. Fifteen fire tenders took over one hour to put out the blaze. The building was immediately evacuated. The fire spread to the kitchen and three cooking gas cylinders exploded. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit.

Kids charred to death

NEW DELHI: Two children were charred to death in a major fire that broke out at Madanpur Khadar here on Thursday.

According to the Fire Service Department, the fire broke out in a slum cluster at 12-30 a.m. on Thursday. Eleven fire tenders took over an hour to put out the blaze. More than 25 jhuggis were gutted. The charred bodies of two children, later identified as Yakoob and Akib, were recovered after the fire was put out. The fire started from a dhalao and engulfed the cluster, the fire officials said.

Two arrested

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly running a betting racket on the World-Cup semi-final match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

One colour television, two mobile phones and one basic phone have allegedly been seized from their possession.

According to the police, a raid was conducted and Sudhir Kumar and Manoj Kumar were arrested at Neelkanth Apartment in Indraprastha Extension on Tuesday. They had allegedly received bets for Rs. 7 lakh at the time of arrest.
