Engineers convert knowledge into wealth: Khanna

Staff Reporter

Tejendra Khanna

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna on Thursday underlined the need for making Delhi the intellectual capital of the world and India a humane and caring techno-economic power.

Speaking at the Annual Convocation of the Delhi College of Engineering, Mr. Khanna said the new challenge lies in nurturing a new breed of students who have the capacity for innovation along with compassion and passion. He said a basic requirement for professional excellence in the engineering field is an unshakeable commitment to zero-tolerance compliance with proper technical specifications prescribed for different works.

The Lieutenant-Governor said engineers were the ones who convert knowledge into wealth; they were the knowledge workers who will determine the competitive advantage of a country. He said as the country embarks on a massive programme of infrastructure development and expansion, engineers have to play a vital role in seeing that these long-duration assets, which are meant to serve the country for decades to come, do not suffer from any qualitative or technical weakness.

Mr. Khanna said there was also a need to train engineers to manage technology and build synergistic linkages and networks as the inter-weaving of technology strategy into business strategy is going to be very crucial for future progress.

On the occasion, he presented degrees to successful graduates. Abhishek Chatterjee won the Lieutenant-Governor's Gold medal for 2005-06, while Shruti Dhingra got the Chief Minister's Gold Medal.
