Aircraft sighted, terror alert sounded in Colombo
B. Muralidhar Reddy
COLOMBO:
The Sri Lanka Air Force late on Thursday night activated the air defence system after a suspected terrorist aircraft was observed in the skies of Katunayake at 10.45 p.m.
A statement by the Defence Ministry said the "situation was under total control" and that a search operation was under way for any sort of hostile elements. In view of the developments, the Government switched off the power system in the national capital and the neighbouring areas. Utter confusion prevailed in the island nation.
According to defence sources, the forces noticed suspicious movement of an aircraft in Anuradhapura and alerted the authorities concerned.
An emergency drill then was put in motion at the Katunayake air base and at other vulnerable military bases in the country.
Since the Tigers launched their first air attack on Katunayake exactly a month ago, the Sri Lanka military has been on the alert. Earlier this week, an attempt by the Tigers to bomb the Palaly air base in the north was foiled.
