MANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said here on Friday that he was appealing again to his Tamil Nadu counterpart M. Karunanidhi to come forward to resolve the Cauvery dispute through talks. Mr. Kumaraswamy told presspersons that the discussions should be based on the actual availability of water in the Cauvery basin. It was probably not possible to settle the dispute through court or tribunal. If the dispute was settled through mutual discussion it could be possible to convince farmers of the two States, he said. He said Mr. Karunanidhi and his predecessor J. Jayalalithaa were senior to him (Mr. Kumaraswamy) in age and they had enough experience in administration. He (Mr. Kumaraswamy) was junior to them in age and had less experience in administration. They should cooperate to settle the dispute in a cordial manner. Then it would make the federal structure of the country more meaningful. The Chief Minister said that all those who talk about Cauvery dispute knew the availability of water in Cauvery basin. All politicians should keep "selfish politics" away to settle the dispute. And all should accept the reality.
Byelection
The Chief Minister said that the high command of the Janata Dal (Secular) would take a decision on fielding the candidate to June 2 by-election to Ullal Assembly Constituency. The party leaders would decide if the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP should field a consensus candidate or separately. Mr. Kumaraswamy was touring some places in Ullal Assembly Constituency on Friday to strengthen the party base.
