Parimarjan signs off with a win

NEW DELHI: Parimarjan Negi signed off his campaign in the Sigeman chess tournament with a 23-move destruction of Sweden's Emil Hermansson in the ninth round at Malmo, Sweden, on Thursday.

Parimarjan sacrificed a bishop on the 12th move of the Sicilian game and soon caught Hermansson's king in the centre with a lethal offensive. Parimarjan finished with four points and tied for the seventh spot with Erwin L'Ami.

Top seed Bulgaria's Ivan Cheparinov drew with defending champion Jan Timman to win the title with seven points.

The results (ninth round): Parimarjan Negi (4) bt Emil Hermansson (Swe, 2); Jan Timman (Ned, 5.5) drew with Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 7); Emanuel Berg (Swe, 5.5) drew with Tiger Hillarp Persson (Swe, 5.5); Vassilious Kotronias (Gre, 4.5) lost to Pontus Carlsson (Swe, 5); Erwin L'Ami (Ned, 4) bt Jonny Hector (Swe, 2).
