RUSEMP silver jubilee celebrations from May 1

MANGALORE: Rural Self-Employment Programme of Diocese of Mangalore at Pakshikere near here, which helps the youth to take up self-employment schemes, is celebrating its silver jubilee.

The celebrations will get under way at Pakshikere village in Mangalore taluk on May 1.

Oswald Monteiro, director of RUSEMP, told presspersons here on Friday that the institute, managed by Canara Organisation for Development and Peace, a non-governmental organisation under the guidance of the Bishop of Mangalore, has taken the lead in promoting non-formal technical education among students from rural areas, especially school dropouts. RUSEMP has trained 2,284 youths from all communities in 44 batches, he added. Set up in 1982, RUSEMP has been working towards realising the vision of Edwin C. Pinto, then secretary of CODP, who believed that social and economic progress was necessary for building up a healthy society.

Pinto was also of the firm belief that the youth, especially those from rural areas, should follow the path of self-reliance and self-employment was the best way to achieving it. The CODP guided the initial activities at RUSEMP, he said. He said RUSEMP collected a nominal fee for training the youth. Banks offered finance to those trained by it to start their own ventures.

It would organise a function for its old students on May 13. The celebrations will end on December 23, he added.
