CHENNAI: Representatives of the Indian Medical Association of Tamil Nadu and Amenity Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT) on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to work together to provide training in `golden hour' care and emergency response to the public. G. Raghavelu, Tamil Nadu unit of the IMA, and J.S. Rajkumar, founder, ALERT, and gastrointestinal surgeon, signed the MoU. The IMA would provide a team of qualified master trainers to provide training in lifesaving first-aid techniques to the public, Dr. Raghavelu said. Beginning with schoolchildren, especially ninth and 11th standard students, the trainers will go on to train college students, pavement vendors, IT and banking sector personnel, autodrivers and housewives. Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu and Chennai Mayor Ma.Subramanian pledged their support to the cause. Training would begin immediately in all the schools run by Chennai Corporation, the Mayor said. Dr. Rajkumar said an emergency situation could occur anywhere. It would be helpful if onlookers or passers-by were able to provide first-aid training within the crucial one hour to save the life of the victim. ALERT was founded to provide first aid and emergency response training free of cost. T. Sadagopan, State secretary of IMA, spoke.
