PUDUKOTTAI: A total number of 2,793 houses will be constructed under the Rajiv Gandhi Group Houses Scheme in the coastal areas of the district for the benefit of the tsunami-hit fishermen. The houses would be built in various villages in Manamelkudi and Avudaiyarkoil blocks. Each house would be constructed on an area of 320 square feet at a cost of Rs. 2 lakh. An official release issued here on Friday said that 2,071 houses would come up in the first phase in Manamelkudi block, while 722 houses constructed in Avudaiyarkoil block. As per survey conducted in the coastal villages coming under the two blocks, a total of 5,094 huts existed within 1000 meters from the coast. The villages included R. Pudupattinam, Gopalapattinam, Ganapathipattinam, Krishnajipattinam, Yenadi, Ammapattinam, Alathur, Parayanendal, Arasaneripattinam, Semankottai, Seyyanam, Athivayal, Viswanathapuram, Avudayarpattinam, Seetharamapattinam and Kattumavadi. The Officer on Special Duty, Tsunami Relief and Rehabilitation, C. V. Sankar, on Friday interacted with the beneficiaries identified by the district administration under the scheme. Mr. Sankar, accompanied by the Collector, S. J. Chiru, and the World Bank representative, E. Narayanan, inspected the houses in which the beneficiaries were at present residing and made enquiries with them.
