S.K. Behera

assumes charge

HUBLI: S.K. Behera has assumed charge as chief commercial manager of South Western Railway, according to a press release. He has taken over from G.G. Phulpagar, who has been transferred to South Central Railway.

Mr. Behera was chief commercial manager of North Central Railway, Allahabad. He has worked in the undivided South Eastern Railway, Calcutta, as divisional railway manager, Ranchi Division, and as chief vigilance officer (Traffic), South Eastern Railway, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

250 junior colleges

to be opened

BANGALORE: In view of high pass percentage in the SSLC examination this year, Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna on Friday said efforts would be made to open 250 junior colleges in the State from the coming academic year.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Revanna said he had asked Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti to take steps to open 10 junior colleges in Bangalore. It had been decided to open 104 first grade colleges in various taluk headquarter towns, he said. — Special Correspondent

Special train between Patna, Bangalore

HUBLI: East Central Railway, Hajipur, will run a special train between Patna and Bangalore to clear the rush, according to a press release.

The Patna-Bangalore City Summer Special Train (No. 5277) will leave Patna at 7.45 p.m. on May 3 and reach Bangalore at 8.40 p.m. on May 5.

The Bangalore-Patna train will leave Bangalore at 9 a.m. on May 7 and reach Patna at 9.50 a.m. on May 10. — Staff Correspondent

More Star Vidya cards to be issued

Bangalore: The Mumbai-based Bank of India is discussing plans with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, to issue more of the bank's Star Vidya cards to help students make payments for various services on engineering college campuses.

A deputy general manager of the bank told reporters here on Thursday that during the initial launch in Bangalore 1,200 electronics-enabled cards had been issued to students, and more engineering colleges were being signed up. — Special Correspondent

Workshop on promoting science

Bangalore: The Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) are jointly organising a workshop on "Communication strategies and delivery systems to promote science and technology among the rural people" on May 10 and 11, at ISRO Antariksha Bhavan. The workshop will evolve recommendations for campaigns to take science and technology to the semi-urban and rural population. — Staff Reporter
