BRIDGETOWN: Batting legend Viv Richards has thrown his weight behind Ramnaresh Sarwan and said the 26-year-old middle-order batsman should succeed Brian Lara as West Indies' next captain. "Selectors must make a choice on a man who can draw youngsters around him and Sarwan has that ability. As a captain you are not looking at somebody who is on cloud nine all the time," said Richards.
Grooming
"Besides, it is only fair if somebody has been groomed in that role and Sarwan clearly has been one," remarked the former West Indies skipper. "Why should we jump over Sarwan's head to get someone else? It's right that the person who has been there for some time gets it." After West Indies' failure to reach the semifinals of the first World Cup at home, Lara quit international cricket and the selectors are expected to name a new captain on Sunday for the tour of England. Richards claimed that Trinidad and Tobago captain Daren Ganga also has the same leading quality. "Another guy who is quite capable and whose seriousness of approach impressed me is Daren. "A captain must appear to think about the game and be wholly committed to it," he said. PTI
