`Hard work and excellent coaching made it possible for me'

Shama Sunder

Topper Sneha D.N.

HASSAN: Sneha D.N., daughter of Devarahalli Nanjappa and a student of Vijaya English Medium High School in Hassan, is not only the school topper but has also secured the highest marks in the SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) examination in the district this year. Her aim is to take up technical studies and later write the IAS (Indian Administrative Service) examination.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Friday, Sneha said she did not take tuitions. She prepared for the examination at school and home. "I used to revise my lessons the same day. My school conducted special classes for girls from 5 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and it helped me. In addition, my school conducted five preparatory tests which enabled me to redefine my priorities. Mistakes committed in the first test were rectified in the second. Our teachers guided us in an excellent manner. From the beginning I aimed to be a topper," she said.

Sneha said her parents and teachers motivated her. They built confidence in me. "My father is an Assistant Executive Engineer in the Zilla Panchayat Sub Division in Tarikere in Chikmagalur District. He used to come home for the weekends. My parents made me confident enough to face the examination," she said.

Sneha has scored 99 marks in mathematics, 95 in Science, 98 each in Kannada and English, 99 in Social Studies and 124 in Sanskrit.

Sneha said she studied till midnight every day and then woke up at 5.30 a.m. to continue her revision till she went to school. "I spent most of my time in the school library and solved as many question papers as possible. I laid stress on Social Studies and aimed at securing 100 per cent marks and I succeeded in scoring 99 marks," she said.

Sneha said she scored 613 marks in the examination as expected. "I was always studying, and listening to what my teachers said in class. My sister is studying in the II PU. She too helped me in my preparations. I do not prefer group study. If two in a group of five do not study, the purpose is defeated. In school, I preferred group study but at home I studied by myself," she said.

Sneha complimented her headmistress and teachers for giving the students "excellent coaching". The school is also proud of her as for the first time one of its students has come first in the district.
