TIRUCHI : Residents of Manapparai and surrounding areas have heaved a sigh of relief following the Government's allotment of Rs.2 crore for construction of the district headquarters hospital. Though Manapparai was the natural choice on account of factors such as population density and proximity to national highway for upgrading the existing taluk headquarters hospital into district headquarters hospital after the K.A.P. Viswanatham Medical College came into existence in Tiruchi, there were speculations that the headquarters status might go to the taluk hospital at Srirangam or Lalgudi. As per the announcement, the existing hospital in the congested part of Manapparai will be entirely shifted to a five-acre site along Manapparai-Viralimalai road. The site at a walkable distance from the town was provided free of cost to the Government by the Manapparai Municipality a few years ago. The location, free from the hustle and bustle of a growing town, is considered ideal for a full-fledged hospital by the public. According to local sources, upgrading the 80-bed hospital is long overdue since the number of visiting outpatients is rising by the day. On an average, the hospital caters to nearly 1,000 outpatients and over 100 inpatients. The new hospital will serve the needs of several thousands of people living in the jurisdiction of Tiruchi, Karur and Pudukottai district in a better way. Health centres in Thogamalai and Kadavur unions in Karur district, Vaiyampatti and Marungapuri in Tiruchi district, and Viralimalai in Pudukottai district usually send patients to the Manapparai hospital for higher referral.
