Lifer for six in

murder case

KADAPA: Kadapa District and Sessions Judge M. Vijayalakshmi has sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in a murder case. Thippigandla Gangadhar, Thippigandla Subbarayudu, Giridigandla Obaiah, T. Subbarayudu, Pallekada Subbarayudu and T. Ayyavaraiah were sentenced to life for killing Bellam Raja in Papaghninagar in Vallur mandal on February 1, 2004. Another accused, Nagulabanda Vasu, died during the course of trial. The Judge examined 12 witnesses and pronounced the judgement. -Staff Reporter

Narayana re-elected

IETE president

HYDERABAD: S. Narayana, head, Instrumentation division, National Geophysical Research Institute, has been re-elected president of the Institution of Electronics and Communication Engineers (IETE), New Delhi, for 2007-08. He is a recipient of several awards and is engaged in design of geophysical instruments for investigation of groundwater and minerals. He was chairman of the Hyderabad chapter of IETE for two terms. - Special Correspondent

Baby stolen from Kurnool hospital

KURNOOL: A day-old baby was stolen from the maternity ward of General Hospital here on Friday. According to reports, an unknown woman who spent the night in the ward as one of the attendants, took away the baby of Laxmi Devi from Ramapuram in Owk mandal. A complaint was lodged with the police. -Special Correspondent

Toddy tappers' plea

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Toddy Tappers Association has opposed the new counter party agreement to be implemented from April to September as it would impose a burden on the tappers. The association had urged the Government to revert to last year's policy wherein one rupee each was collected instead of Rs.100 from societies and members. - Special Correspondent

Additional coaches

for summer specials

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has augmented the capacity on three weekly summer specials with additional coaches to cope with the rush, a press release said. Accordingly, an air-conditioned 3-tier coach will be attached to train no. 748/747 Hyderabad - Visakhapatnam - Hyderabad (from April 28) and to train no. 717/718 Secunderabad - Rajkot - Secunderabad (from May 2). Train no. 719/720 Secunderabad - Bikaner - Secunderabad will have an air-conditioned 3-tier coach attached with immediate effect. -Special Correspondent

Elected

HYDERABAD: Vasanta Nageswara Rao, chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative Bank Ltd, was on Friday unanimously elected vice-chairman of the National Federation of State Cooperative Banks. The election was held in New Delhi. - Special Correspondent
