MADURAI: The `pattabhishekam' (coronation) ceremony of Goddess Meenakshi was performed amid chanting of hymns on the eighth day of Chithirai festival at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Friday. The ceremony began with several rites after which `abishekam' was performed to the diamond crown of deity, followed by `deeparadhana.' Karumuttu T. Kannan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, received the `parivattam' the respect originally accorded to King Tirumalai Nayak from the `bhattars.' The diamond-studded crown, which adorned Goddess Meenkashi, was known as `Rayar crown' as it was donated by Appaji Rayar, a Minister in the Krishna Devaraya regime, more than 500 years ago. It was passed on to this temple deity through King Tirumalai Nayak. The wedding ceremony of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareswarar will be performed on Sunday.
