dated April 28, 1957: Gift to be returned

The Ceylon Government has decided to return a DDT plant gifted to it by the UNICEF on the ground that it is uneconomical to run the plant. The plant is capable of manufacturing 770 tons of DDT annually. The condition attached to the gift is that Ceylon should operate the plant at full capacity. The Government has found that the production cost of DDT is Rs.1.96 per pound, whereas the imported price is Rs.1.50.
