MANGALORE: B.M. Hegde, former Vice-Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal (now Manipal University) will inaugurate "Manaswini", an institute dedicated for psychiatry and counselling located near Jyothi Circle here on Sunday. Managed by Ravish Thunga, consultant psychiatrist and faculty at Kasturba Medical College here, the institute aims at providing holistic psychiatric care. Dr. Thunga told presspersons here on Friday that owing to rapidly changing trends in society, rise in nuclear family systems and competitive struggle for social recognition, stress had become part and parcel of an individual's life. If not handled properly, stress could tax our physical and mental resources and lead to psychological and behavioural disorders. Such stressful situations had increased in recent times, he said.
Coping with stress
Observing that there was need to evolve constructive measures to effectively manage such problems, he said the responsibility was on professionals dealing with mental health to equip individuals with skills to cope with negative effects of stress. Manaswini, the brainchild of Dr. Thunga is equipped to provide psychiatric consultation, counselling, day care facilities, narco analysis, biofeedback therapy and so on. There are plans to provide inpatient treatment and rehabilitation facilities to the people in the near future. K.A. Ashok Pai, consultant psychiatrist, MANASA, Shimoga will be the chief guest. K.S. Shetty, senior psychiatrist, Fr. Muller's Hospital, Kankanady will inaugurate the day care and therapy centre. Olinda Pereira, former principal, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya will offer felicitations, according to Dr. Thunga.
