Fishermen educated about kinds of fish in Pulicat Lake Participants learnt about the Disaster Management Act
CHENNAI:
Residents of fishing hamlets around the Pulicat Lake were introduced to the diet of fish they caught for a living at the workshop on Community-Based Disaster Preparedness at Loyola College here on Friday.
The initiative between the College and six non-governmental organisations will include research and training components to better understand and face various problems of the Pazhaverkadu region. Sustainable livelihood and vulnerability studies have been conducted and some of the findings and achievements are to be discussed at the two-day workshop to be held over Friday and Saturday.
Speakers at the inaugural session lauded the unique initiative. The NGOs form the Pazhaverkadu Action Network, which works with local communities to prepare them to meet any eventuality, natural or otherwise. As part of attempts to conserve bio-diversity, fishermen were educated about the kinds of fish found in the lake and their various diets.
