Gunmen attack mosque

PATTANI (Thailand): Gunmen shot up a mosque on Saturday in southern Thailand, where security had forces killed dozens of Muslims three years ago in an event that fuelled an Islamic insurgency gripping the area, police said. No one was injured in the attack on the Krue Se Mosque. It comes on the third anniversary of an attack on the same mosque by security forces in which 32 insurgents were killed in a hail of rocket-propelled grenade and assault rifle fire. Other clashes the same day between Muslims and government forces resulted in the deaths of a total of 107 people at the hands of security forces, turning the mosque into a symbol of the heavy-handed tactics of Thai authorities. — AP
