Tirunelveli: Karnataka beat Tamil Nadu 2-1 in the last match of the four-team league in the 16th South Zone Youth National football championship at Anna stadium, Palayamkottai, on Saturday. Karnataka finished with 6 points (2 wins and a loss) and Tamil Nadu with 4 points (1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss). However, Kerala, which finished with 7 points, emerged winner and qualified for the Nationals finals at Assam. Much was expected from Tamil Nadu. It took an early lead and gave some hope to the local crowd. But they were disappointed as Karnataka bounced back, not only to win the match, but also finish as runner-up. Chief guest, Mr. Ashok Kumar Das, Commissioner of Police, gave away the prizes.
Excise, Tiruchi, prevails
Central Excise and Customs, Tiruchi, prevailed over Nethaji Football Club, Thanjavur, 5-4 in an action packed and lively match in the 24th Champion Club football tournament for the Universal Trophy at Krishna stadium, Velangudi near Karaikudi, on Saturday. Rathu (2), Vinoth Kumar (2), and Anand scored for the winner while, Suresh (3) and Chellapandy scored for the loser. In another match, CVRDE Avadi trounced Bodi Football Club (Theni) 7-0. Sudhakar scored three (17th, 59th, 74th), Krishna a brace (64th, 68th), while Murthy (8th) and Viswanathan (34th) scored one each.
Kaushik in sole lead
S. Kaushik of TCA, Chennai, continued to be the sole leader in the boys' section with 6.5 points at the end of the seventh round in the 20th State under-11 chess championship for the Dolphin Trophy at Madurai on Saturday. KBC wins a thriller
Karur Basketball Club, Karur beat South Zone Police, Madurai 61-59 in a keenly contested match and entered the pre-quarterfinals of the 15th annual Cauvery Ammal memorial Trophy State-level basketball tournament at Vadamadurai, near Dindigul, on Saturday. The results (second round): Karur BC 61 (Periasamy 20, Prem 11) bt South Zone Police, Madurai, 59 (Packiaraj 13, Venkatesh 17); Aranthangi BC 41 (Hari 16, Dinesh 12) bt Cauvery Ammal BC, Vadamadurai 20 (Suresh 10). Chennai retains title
Chennai retained the title defeating host Tuticorin 56-27 in the final of the all-India major ports kabaddi tournament at the Port Trust Sports Council ground, Tuticorin, on Friday night. Mumbai beat Vishakapatnam 14-9 in the third place match.
Summer camp
