Betting racket: 20 held

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Twenty persons, including property dealers, factory owners, transporters and commission agents, have been arrested at Aryapura here for allegedly running a betting racket on the Cricket World Cup final match between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The police said several teams were constituted following inputs that some people might indulge in betting on the eve of the final. On Friday night, the police received a tip that Rakesh Jain was allegedly using the first floor of his house in Aryapura for betting and charging Rs. 50 per person as entry fee.

Acting on the information, the house was raided at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday and 20 persons — aged between 20 and 51 years — were found indulging in betting and a sum of Rs.2,85,670 was at stake. On seeing the police team, the accused tried to flee but were arrested.
