Betting racket busted; 20 arrested

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Twenty people, including property dealers, factory owners, transporters and commission agents, have been arrested at Aryapura here for allegedly running a betting racket on the World Cup cricket final between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The police said several teams were constituted following reports that some people might indulge in betting on the eve of the final. On Friday night, the police received a tip-off that Rakesh Jain was using the first floor of his house in Aryapura for betting and charging Rs. 50 per person as entry fee.

Acting on the tip-off, a raid was conducted in the house at 1-30 a.m. on Saturday and 20 people -- aged between 20 and 51 years -- were found indulging in betting and Rs. 2,85,670 was at stake. On seeing the police team, the accused tried to flee but were arrested.

Fourteen packs of playing cards, tokens of different denominations and colours, one calculator and several notebooks were seized from their possession, the police said.
