36 new hospitals to come up in Delhi

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday announced that her Government would construct 36 new hospitals in various parts of the city for taking primary health care to the doorstep of people and providing super specialty services to them.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly-constructed campus of the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) at Dilshad Garden in East Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said of these hospitals, work on setting up seven new hospitals at Koki Wala Bagh, Burari, Hastsal, Sarita Vihar, Baprola, Keshav Puram and Molar Bund would start in 2007-2008.

"This would help in strengthening and expanding multi-disciplinary hospitals to make secondary and tertiary health care accessible to the common man,'' she said.

To strengthen the health care system, she said, the fleet of CAT ambulance had been increased to 300 and the Delhi State Cancer Institute established at GTB Hospital had become the first Government institution in the country to straightway and exclusively start the latest linear accelerator-based precision radiotherapy facility.

As for IHBAS, she said, neurosurgery services would be started to provide comprehensive care in the field of neurosciences and the bed strength of the hospital would be doubled from 245 to 500. Stating that IHBAS was the only institute of its kind in North India, she said with its multidisciplinary approach and equal emphasis on socio-cultural factors, it had managed to mitigate the stigma associated with mental disorders to some extent.
