BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to provide patronage to tribal and folk dances of India, a Puri-based NGO Shree Sreekshetra Suchana is hosting a two-day national dance festival at the open-air theatre in Puri on May 12 and 13. Into its fourth annual edition, the folk fair will showcase troupes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa, said its secretary Rajesh Mohanty. Besides, the Song and Drama Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is sending several troupes to the fair, he added.
Tribal culture
Their exposure to these marginalised cultural practices will enhance their appreciation and respect for tribal traditions and it will also bridge the urban-rural divide in cultural scenario," Mr. Rajesh reasoned.
Over the years, a large number of foreign tourists evinced keen interest in watching and filming the events, he said.
The organisation that works for tribals had set a tradition of honouring tribal leaders every year during the festival, he informed.
Recipients
Former Orissa Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang, a musician in his own right, and Padma Shri Tulasi Munda of Keonjhar were the recipients of the honour, he added.
