Mercury shoots up, heat wave continues

Chandigarh: Mercury rose drastically as heat wave conditions intensified in Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh. Day temperatures shot up by up to six degrees Celsius above normal at some places in the region.

Hissar in Haryana, where the maximum temperature touched 44.4 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal, continued to be the hottest place in the region.

Amritsar in Punjab sizzled at a high of 42.5 degrees Celsius, which was six degrees above normal, a met office spokesman said.

Patiala recorded 41.6 degrees Celsius against 39.8 C on Friday. The temperature in Ambala and Karnal in Haryana read 39.9 and 40.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

With a maximum temperature of four degrees above normal, Chandigarh settled at a high of 39.6 degrees Celsius.

Frequent loadshedding added to the woes of the people reeling under scorching heat.

No immediate respite seems to be in the offing with the Met office predicting further rise in temperatures and mainly dry weather in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh over the next two days. -- PTI
