Chandigarh: Following the arrest of nine members who were allegedly engaged in betting during the Sri Lanka-New Zealand World Cup cricket semi-final, Haryana Police on Saturday identified a number of telephone lines which belong to suspected betters. This was disclosed by police officers at a meeting of Superintendents of Police and Deputy Commissioners of districts presided over by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda here, an official spokesman said. It was informed by the police officers in the meeting that 1100 telephone lines have been identified at various places in the State, which could be used by the alleged betters. The spokesman said that the meeting was informed that firm action would be taken to prevent betting on the final match of the World Cup to be played on Saturday evening between Australia and Sri Lanka. Mr. Hooda appreciated the efforts made by the State police, especially Superintendent of Police, Kaithal and Inspector General Police, Gurgaon in busting complex network of cricket betting recently thus saving a large number of families from being ruined, the spokesman said. He, however, did not disclose the action taken by the police to prevent betting.
