JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Labour Minister, Kirorilal Meena, has called for simplification of labour laws and doing away with "inspector raj'' to bring succour to labourers, daily wage-earners and factory workers in the present age of liberalisation. Addressing the 41st Indian Labour Conference in New Delhi over the weekend, Mr. Meena said the Central and State Governments should work together to stop violation of labour laws by employers and strengthen the legislations such as the Payment of Bonus Act and Contract Labour Act in view of their extension to lakhs of labourers in the unorganised sector. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, inaugurated the two-day conference and it was presided over by the Union Minister of State for Labour, Oscar Fernandes.
`Progressive step'
Mr. Meena said the appointment of recovery officers under the Minimum Wages Act and Payment of Wages Act by the Labour Department, on the lines of
The Minister pointed out that the State Government had drafted amendments to the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, to make it more effective and the proposed changes would be considered shortly by the State Cabinet.
He said action had also been initiated to register all placement agencies to stop exploitation of unemployed youth in the State.
