BERHAMPUR: The Berhampur vigilance court has sentenced former Circle Inspector of Sadar police station Udayanath Gouda and its former officer in-charge Gagan Bihari Swain to one-year jail and slapped a fine of Rs. 2,000 on each of them. Deciding a case pending against the police officers since 1996 on Friday, Special Vigilance Judge Sarat Chandra Mishra found the officials guilty of exploiting a person with a false case and demanding bribe from him.
Bribe demanded
According to the Vigilance Department, these officials had picked up a person Arun Kumar Jena during night patrol. They demanded Rs. 2,000 as bribe from Mr. Jena and threatened to arrest him on the charge of trading in narcotics if he did not pay up. Mr. Jena managed to bring it to the notice of the Vigilance Department, which then lodged a case against the officers.
