BERHAMPUR: As homage to Utkal Gourav Madhusudan Das on his birth anniversary, lawyers of the Ganjam Bar Association decided to give `hazira' before judges in Oriya instead of English. Secretary of the association Manoj Patnaik put forward the proposal at a meeting held at the bar on Saturday, which was accepted by all members present. It may be noted that the birth anniversary of Madhusudan, who is popularly called Madhu Babu or Madhu Barrister, is also celebrated as Lawyers' Day in Orissa as he was a legendary Oriya lawyer of the British era.
Pivotal role
President of the association Sudhansu Panda said the decision to use Oriya to give `hazira' was the right tribute to the great leader who had played a pivotal role in formation of modern Orissa State and uplift of Oriya language and culture before independence. `Hazira' is any application put before the judge by a lawyer for his client in his presence. The members of the bar association also organised a blood donation camp to mark the day.
Public meeting
The statue of Madhu Babu at Gandhi Nagar Square was garlanded by several dignitaries. A public meeting was organised near the statue. Schoolchildren who also attended the meeting shouted the famous slogan `Kalia Ghoda re Chadhibi, Madhu Babu sathe ladhibi' (I'll ride a black horse and face efficient Madhu Babu in court). Madhu Babu had become synonymous with excellence in Orissa and parents used to recite this couplet to their children to enthuse them to excel like Madhu Babu.
`Swabhiman Divas'
`Ama Odisha' and Oriya newspaper `The Sambad' celebrated the birth anniversary as `Swabhiman Divas'. A function was organised in the evening by these organisations. It was attended by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu, Kendriya Sahitya Akademi award winner Sudarsan Acharya among others.
