    Direct and indirect taxes

Mr. Chidambaram told newspersons that the actual revenue collections through indirect taxes, including customs, central excise and service taxes touched Rs. 2,40,896 crore in 2006-07 as compared to the budget estimates of Rs. 2,29,533 crore and revised estimates of Rs. 2,36,202 crore.

Similarly, the actual revenue collections through direct taxes also peaked to Rs. 2,29,181 crore against the revised estimate of Rs. 2,29,007 crore for the year.

The collection by way of customs duties during the fiscal at Rs. 86,294 crore was in excess of both the budgeted estimates at Rs. 77,066 crore as also the higher revised estimates at Rs. 81,800 crore.

In central excise, the collection during the fiscal year at Rs. 1,17,250 crore was lower than the budget estimates of Rs. 1,17,967 crore but higher than the revised estimates of Rs. 1,16,233 crore.
