Nagercoil: The Minister for Rural Development and Local Administration, M.K. Stalin, will inaugurate the country's first market to be run by a traders' association on May 2.

Considering the drawbacks at the 104-year-old Kanagamoolam Shandy at Vadasery in Nagercoil, the Municipal administration planned to shift the market to a place near Beach Road junction.

Since the proposed site was found unsuitable, the market users requested the authorities to wait till a better site was located.

Later, the farmers and traders joined hands and floated a body — Agricultural Products Producers' and Traders' Association' (APPTA) — to construct and manage a market yard on their own at Theregalputhur village panchayat (Ozhuginaserry) on the town's outskirts.

The total cost of the project is Rs.30 crore (with financial assistance from State Bank of India and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development-NABARD), besides contribution from the APPTA.

The modern market has been constructed on a sprawling 10-acre area with four acres being allotted for garbage disposal — eight km away from the site.

The market will have provision for cold storage, ripening chamber, drying yard, banks with ATM facility, police station, post office, farmers' guest house, traders' guest house and labourers' shed.

Computer facility for administration, touch screen facility for information, electronic display boards for information and agri-clinics for production and post-harvest management are other amenities available at the modern market, said Chellathurai, president of APPTA.
