Season's hottest day in the Capital

NEW DELHI: The Capital came under the grip of intense heat conditions on Saturday with the mercury shooting up to 42.4 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest day of the season so far. The maximum temperature was 4 degrees above normal and climbed further from Friday's high of 40.9, the weather office said.

Many people stayed indoors to escape the scorching heat.

The minimum temperature, however, was within the normal range at 23.4 degrees Celsius.

Delhiites should not expect any relief from the heat conditions any time soon, with the weatherman saying the maximum on Sunday is likely to settle around 42 degrees.

Four arrested

NEW DELHI: Four persons, including a minor, have been arrested at Jharoda here for their alleged involvement in three cases of auto-theft and a burglary.

According to the police, 20-year-old Deepak was arrested at Pushpa Jagatpur on April 22 and a compact disc player, some cash and jewellery were recovered from his possession. Later Sanju (19) and Sanjay (19) and a minor were also arrested with stolen jewellery and a mobile phone, the police said.

Cheating charge

NEW DELHI: A 44-year-old assistant accountant with Vaisya Co-operative Bank has been arrested in Gandhi Nagar here for allegedly cheating two bank customers of several lakh rupees.

According to the police, Ashok Gupta illegally transferred over Rs. 9 lakh from the accounts of one Sanjay Gupta and his father to his daughter's account. He was arrested on Friday after Sanjay reported the matter to the police.

During interrogation, Ashok purportedly told the police that he had suffered huge monetary loss in chit fund in 1985-86. He abused his power and cheated several customers to make up for the loss, police said.

Two boys drown

NEW DELHI: Two boys were drowned in a drain at Nangloi here on Saturday while taking bath.

According to the police, 10-year-old Bodesh and 12-year-old Sonu were taking a bath in Vikaspuri drain on Saturday evening along with their friends. They strayed into the deep end of the drain and were drowned. When their friends cried out for help, some local residents pulled them out. However, both died on their way to hospital.

Seminar on

Daisaku Ikeda

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in collaboration with Bharat Soka Gakkai is organising a seminar on "Daisaku Ikeda: Building a culture of peace" at IGNCA Lecture Hall here on May 3. Former Ambassador to the United States Abid Hussain will deliver the keynote address, while former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court J. S. Verma will preside over the function.

Paintings on the theme "Emergence of Peace" dedicated to Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, the noted Buddhist philosopher and Soka Gakkai International president, by artist Sushma Aggarwal will also be on display for public viewing till May 9.
