BANGALORE: France was relaxing immigration laws so as to enable foreign students to pursue a profession after their studies, French Ambassador to India Dominique Girard said on Saturday. Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of conferring the Legion of Honour on G.R. Gopinath, Managing Director of Air Deccan, here, Mr. Girard said the relaxation and work permit would be subject to certain conditions such as students taking up legitimate jobs so that it did not result in illegal immigration. The process of relaxation had already begun and it was in the implementation stage, said Mr. Girard in answer to a question. He, however, did not elaborate as to how long a student could stay after completing the course. Besides relaxing the immigration laws, the Government was also planning to simplify the education system in France. Various undergraduate and postgraduate courses would be revised on a par with courses offered in the United Kingdom and the United States of America, he noted. Also, teaching of English would be made a separate course to attract more number of students, Mr. Girard added. Mr. Girard said France had engaged in serious discussions with Indian authorities and institutions in developing biofuel. "We have developed the technology to a certain extent and are serious in using the expertise of Indian scientists to improve further," he said. While India had been experimenting with production of biofuel with food products, France had succeeded in extracting biofuel from non-food products, he noted.
