Narrow win for Sethu BC

Dindigul: Sethu Basketball Club, Madurai, beat Karur Basketball Club, Karur, 76-74 in a close match and entered the quarterfinals of the 15th annual Cauvery Ammal memorial Trophy State-level basketball tournament at Vadamadurai near here on Sunday.

The results:

Pre-quarterfinals: Sethu BC 76 (Santhana Krishnan 24, Raphacl Dennis 17) bt Karur BC 74 (Periasamy 19, Jaffer Sadique 18); Young Star BC, Batlagundu 70 (Premkumar 26, Jeyachandran 14) bt Aranthangi BC 39 (Harishankar 10, Dinesh 10).

CVRDE advances

CVRDE, Avadi entered the quarterfinals of the 24th champion Club Trophy football tournament for Universal Trophy defeating Central Excise and Customs, Tiruchi 3-1 at Velangudi near Karaikudi on Sunday.

The Tiruchi team which scored in the 17th minute through Muthusamy. Manivannan equalised for the Avadi team in the 20th minute and took the lead with a goal by Murthy in the 43rd minute. Manivannan converted a spot-kick in the 80th minute and consolidated the position.

Easy for Vignesh SC

Vignesh Sports Club chalked out a 69-run victory over Jahir Cricket Club, Vedasandur in the DDCA first division league at Dindigul on Sunday.

The scores:

First division: Vignesh Sports Club 291 for six in 45 overs (M. Abdur Rahim 40, R. Gokul 40) bt Jahir CC, Vedasandur 222 in 38.2 overs (U. Muthukumar 68, M. Thanga Paramasivam 40, R. Gokul four for 43).

Second division: Sri Vasantha Sweets CC 181 for five in 25 overs (E. Jeya Prakash 41, K. Deepan Babu 51) bt All Rounders CC 163 in 22.3 overs (R. Mugil Azhalgan four for 31).

Third division: Azhar CC 111 for nine in 16 overs bt Orange Shirts CC 40 in 11 overs.

Kaushik keeps lead

S. Kaushik of TCA, Chennai continued to be the sole leader in boys section with 7.5 points, while Meenu Priya of Madurai was the sole leader in girls section with 7 points, at the end of eighth round in the 20th State under-11 chess championship for the Dolphin Trophy at Madurai on Sunday.

Hat-trick by Suresh

A hat-trick by Suresh helped Karuppiah Ambalam memorial Football Club, Kottaiyur defeat Star Muslim Football Club, Ilayankudi 3-1 in the Sivagangai DFA `B' division league at Karaikudi on Sunday.

The results: KAM FC 3 (Suresh) bt SM FC 1 (Basheer Ali); SM FC 0 drew with Golden Star FC, Karuviapatti 0.

Saturday results: SM FC 0 drew with Winners SC, Vairavapuram 0; SM FC 1 (Mohamed Hussain) bt Nehru Youth FC, Kothari 0.

Basketball trials
