Steps taken to ensure adequate water supply in Nagapattinam

Stalin hands over permanent houses to tsunami victims

Nagapattinam: The State Government has taken steps to ensure adequate drinking water supply in the district during this summer following representations from the people, said the Minister for Local Administration, M.K. Stalin, here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the combined water supply scheme for Nagapattinam and Velankanni at Poompuhar organised by the district administration, the Minister said that the district would not face water scarcity and pointed out that the Anaikarai-Kollidam combined water scheme would cater to the drinking water needs of Kilvelur, Nagapattinam and Vailankanni areas.

Mr Stalin said that similar schemes would be implemented for other areas of the district and cited the example of the Ramanathapuram combined water supply scheme being implemented with the main objective of wiping out water scarcity in the region.

The Minister also handed over the keys of 350 permanent houses to tsunami survivors of Poompuhar constructed by `SEVAI', a non-governmental organisation, at a cost of Rs.6.47 crore.

He pointed out that the Government had provided drinking water, road and electricity facilities to these permanent houses at a total cost of Rs.1.23 crore.

Mr Stalin also inaugurated the distribution of welfare assistance to 36,000 beneficiaries and the annual tourism festival `Chithirai Muzhu Nilavu Vizha' at Poompuhar.

Earlier, participating in a function at Porayar, the Minister announced that a new bus stand would be constructed for the town within a year under the heritage city development scheme.

The Minister for Tourism, N. Suresh Rajan, the Minister for Dairy Development, U.Mathivanan, the Nagapattinam MP, A.K.S. Vijayan, the Collector, Tenkasi S.Jawahar, the Managing Director of TWAD, Swaran Singh, and MLAs S. Rajakumar, K.Anbazhagan, M.K.Periasamy, S.K.Vedarathinam, M.Panneerselvam, V.Marimuthu and Padmavathy, also spoke.

Works reviewed

The Minister for Local Administration, M.K. Stalin, on Sunday, reviewed all the development works, including water supply and drainage facilities, with the officials at Mayiladuturai.

He directed the officials to expedite all the works and complete them in the stipulated time.

The Union Minister of State for Finance, S.S. Palanimanickam, and the Minister for Backward Classes, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, and senior officials attended the meeting.
