End to Cantonment water woes in sight?

Water Board's master plan to meet requirements till 2036

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has submitted a Rs.89.25-crore master plan to be spent in three stages for improving water supply in Secunderabad Cantonment and put an end to water woes of people living in the area.

The plan has been projected to meet water requirements till the year 2036 by taking into account the projected population growth of 7.4 lakh and number of connections to reach an estimated 1.4 lakh.

As an immediate measure to strengthen water distribution network and for first stage of the project, it has prepared a Rs. 75.70 crores plan to cater to the present population needs of 2.72 lakh and meet the current water demand of 9.42 million gallons a day (MGD).

SCB is managing to supply only 3.04 MGD leaving a deficit of 8.43 MGD. The master plan prepared by the consultant agency, Aarvee Associates, has estimated Rs. 9.23 crores worth works to meet the projected demand for water of 17.96 MGD in 2021 and Rs.4.32 crores works to be taken up for the third stage meet the demand of 26.18 MGD by 2036.

Proposals

Increasing reservoirs capacity, laying new pipelines and installing new pump sets are part of the plan.

Laying of a 600 mm diameter pipeline from Alwal reservoir to Rudranagar and also from Mahendra Hills to Karkhana have been mooted in first stage. "We would like to ground works to an extent of Rs.35 crores raised from our own internal resources to implement the first stage of the plan. Approvals and tendering process could take up to six months. We can see water supply improvement in two-three years," promises SCB senior officials.
