CHENNAI: The State Government is committed to developing capabilities of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to match global standards in the next five years, said Special Commissioner of Industries and Commerce M. Raman on Friday. The Government will soon unveil a plan to improve the capabilities through a public-private partnership mode, he said at a seminar on `Technology, Funding and Marketing for SMEs,' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He said this in context of a recent CII study, which mapped the State's human resource and skill initiatives and projected a requirement of one million jobs by 2015. Small units would be identified to form industry clusters. The SMEs would also be encouraged to tie-ups with industrial training institutes (ITI), he said. Industries Department special secretary K. Rajaraman mooted a HR skill summit every year to help SMEs, which were the worst hit by the shortage of qualified manpower. Mr. Rajaraman stressed the need to set up business incubators in all districts to disseminate technology to smaller units. Managing director of Hitech Arai B.T. Bangara spoke.
