Rs. 31.81 crore sanctioned for State
The allocation is provisional and may be enhanced during the course of the year. The fund is to be utilised for execution/completion of schemes to provide safe drinking water facilities to rural habitations and schools. Of the released amount, 15 per cent may be utilised for operation and maintenance of water bodies in rural areas and up to 5 per cent spent on sustainability measures. The amount should not be used for testing water quality as there is a separate fund for the purpose. The State has been directed to involve Panchayat Raj institutions in implementation of the projects, according to a release here. Special Correspondent

Condemning the alleged attempt to molest the fidelity of a dalit woman, Kaliyammal (32), and the consequent murder of her husband, Mari (45) by a landlord Thillairajan at Pattamangalam village near Avudayarkovil recently, the party's district secretary, M. Chinnadurai said that this was the second incident testifying the humiliation being meted out to the socially-weaker sections. Mr. Chinnadurai said that the State Government should nip in the bud the `casteist forces' through strict action. A special and close vigil should be kept against those humiliating the lower-caste persons and the depressed sections of the society.
