Action sought against encroachers

KASARAGOD: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president P.K. Krishnadas alleged on Monday that leaders of constituent parties of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the Left were involved in the encroachment of land at Munnar. He was speaking at a public meeting here in connection with the launch of his `Janayatra.'

He said while Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy was pointing an accusing finger at CPI(M) leaders, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was putting the blame on UDF leaders and their accomplices. However, the reality was that both UDF and LDF leaders were involved in illegal encroachment on land, said the BJP president.

He said the Chief Minister should initiate strict action against encroachers. The LDF and UDF should publish a list of leaders and their followers who were involved in land encroachments at Munnar and other hill stations, he said.

Mr. Krishna Das said the economy of the State had suffered a setback in the 50 years of rule by the CPI(M) and Congress-led fronts. The growth of the industrial sector in the State was one per cent and agricultural sector had recorded negative growth in recent years, Mr. Krishna Das said.

He said the Ministers of the present Government were trying to denigrate Hinduism and Hindu deities. The Electricity Minister and Devaswom Minister were attacking Hindu beliefs and the BJP would not allow it, he said.

Earlier, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa inaugurated the Yatra by handing over the party flag to Mr. Krishna Das. Mr. Yediyurappa said the LDF and UDF had pushed the State back in development matters. The law and order situation in States where communist parties were in power was unsatisfactory, he said.

He said the Planning Commission had congratulated Karnataka for its achievements on the development front and welfare measures for the poor. He said the Karnataka government would implement a ban on country liquor and lottery in the State from July 1.
